Sonographer Awareness Campaign

Sonographer Awareness Campaign: Why recognition matters more than ever

Many people know sonographers for pregnancy scans, but their work goes far beyond that. From heart disease to emergency medicine, this campaign reveals the full scope of their expertise. The Sonographer Awareness Campaign shines a light on the vital role sonographers play across healthcare, highlighting their expertise in ultrasound and the difference they make to patient care every day.

What is a Sonographer?

Sonographers are highly trained health professionals who use ultrasound to provide critical diagnostic imaging. With over 2,200 hours of clinical training prior to graduation, they combine technical skill with patient care to deliver scans that often form the first step in diagnosis and treatment.

Sonographers don’t just “take images”, they interpret complex anatomy in real time, working closely with doctors and other health professionals to guide patient care and improve outcomes.

Sonographers really are the backbone of diagnostic imaging, performing more than 11 million ultrasounds annually in Australia alone - that’s over 30,000 scans every single day.

Where Do Sonographers Work?

You’ll find sonographers across almost every field of medicine, including:

  • Cardiac and vascular care detecting heart disease and circulatory problems

  • Musculoskeletal imaging diagnosing sports injuries and joint conditions

  • Paediatrics supporting the care of infants and children

  • Women’s health gynaecology, obstetrics, and breast imaging

  • General imaging delivering diagnostic scans across all disciplines and areas of the body

  • Emergency medicine providing rapid scans in critical situations

  • Non-clinical roles including education, ultrasound applications, research, and other professional contributions

From monitoring pregnancies to detecting life-threatening conditions, sonographers are at the frontline of healthcare.

Why Recognition Matters

Despite their extensive expertise, only 11% of the public know what a sonographer is and often mistake them for other healthcare professionals. This lack of awareness impacts recognition of their role in healthcare, and ultimately, the support they receive.

By recognising sonographers as skilled medical professionals, we highlight the essential part they play in saving lives, supporting patients, and strengthening our health system.
