Speakers

Mark Hamilton is a Consultant Vascular, Endovascular and Renal Transplant Surgeon with private rooms at The Darwin Private Hospital Specialist Consulting Suites through NT Cardiac, and a public appointment at the Royal Darwin Hospital.

He trained in Vascular, Endovascular and Renal Transplant Surgery in Hamilton and Auckland in New Zealand, along with Melbourne, Perth, and Hobart. He has been resident in the NT since 2014 and is the only local Vascular Surgeon resident in the NT.

He has been practicing as a full time public and private consultant in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in both New Zealand and Australia since 2005, and brings a wealth of experience to his role in the Territory. He is the recipient of the Chief Ministers Medal for his service to Vascular Surgery in the NT.

He has extensive experience in the management of complex arterial pathology including aortic pathology of all kinds from dissection to aneurysm. His particular areas of subspecialist interest include Thoraco-abdominal aneurysm, complex hybrid aortic surgery, visceral segment and redo aortic surgery. He has extensive experience in thoracic stenting techniques for dissection and aneurysm.

Mark has a strong interest in stroke prevention surgery and acute carotid surgery. He strives for best practice in carotid surgery including performing acute carotid endarterectomy for transient ischaemic attack or stroke in evolution.

He has been the Consultant Vascular Surgeon to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, and he has extensive experience in Paediatric vascular issues and has an excellent working relationship with the Paediatric Surgeons at a number of tertiary paediatric hospitals across Australia.

He has previously been co-appointed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital as a Renal Transplant and access surgeon and has extensive experience in all aspects of management of renal failure patients and their complex vascular and access issues. He currently manages the largest per-capita dialysis population in the world as a sole surgeon.

He also provides outreach consulting and operative services to Alice Springs. He has provided vascular surgery services to the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa since 2006 and until recently has been the sole provider of the renal access/dialysis surgery to Samoa’s large dialysis service. This is an entirely voluntary program.

He is the author of a number of textbook chapters in major peer reviewed texts on diabetic foot pathology, acute vascular emergencies and thoracic aortic pathology and is an invited author for the Oxford Textbook of Vascular Surgery. He is a reviewer for the ANZ Journal of Surgery for vascular surgery articles and has peer reviewed many articles for this publication.

Mark has an active interest in all areas of vascular surgery and provides a robust, contemporary and rounded vascular service to the Northern Territory.
