ASA Releases New Endometriosis Guidelines and Technical Reference

The Australasian Sonographers Association (ASA) is pleased to announce the release of the ASA Endometriosis Guidelines (2026) alongside a Technical Educational Reference (2026), now available to all members.

Responding to member feedback calls for clear, practical guidance to support endometriosis-focused ultrasound, the guidelines and guide have been developed by sonographers, for sonographers, and reinforce ASA’s commitment to supporting safe, high-quality practice and advancing the profession across all career stages.

Endometriosis is a complex and often underdiagnosed condition, affecting an estimated 10–14% of individuals in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Variability in training, access to expertise and referral pathways has contributed to inconsistent patient experiences and delays in diagnosis. The new guidelines address these challenges by defining minimum practice standards and promoting a structured, consistent approach to scanning, documentation, and referral.

The guidelines introduce a two-tiered model of practice, supporting both routine and advanced assessment, while encouraging a “right scan, first time” approach to reduce repeat examinations and improve patient pathways. The accompanying Technical Educational Reference provides practical, sonographer-focused guidance to support implementation, including scan techniques, documentation and recognised limitations.

Developed through a multidisciplinary collaboration and informed by the latest evidence and clinical expertise, these resources represent ASA’s ongoing commitment to delivering member-driven education and tools that enhance capability and improve patient outcomes.
