Help Shape the Future of Sonography Practice – Have Your Say

The Australian Sonographers Association (ASA) has launched a bi-national, first of its kind research project that will shape the future of sonography practice in Australia and New Zealand.

ASA has commissioned Central Queensland University (CQU) to lead comprehensive research examining the current and potential role of sonographers in ultrasound guided interventional procedures, with a particular focus on musculoskeletal (MSK) injections

We frequently receive questions about interventional procedures and scope of practice from members. We also know demand for ultrasound guided interventions is increasing, healthcare systems are under pressure, and workforce challenges are impacting access to care. Currently, there is no consistent national framework governing sonographer involvement in these procedures, with legislative and regulatory settings varying significantly by jurisdiction.

Using a robust, multimethod approach, including a national survey, literature review, focus groups, and jurisdictional analysis, the project will generate the evidence base ASA needs to advocate effectively on behalf of the profession. The findings will inform policy and advocacy positions, support evidence-based discussions on scope of practice reform, guide the development of training and credentialling pathways, and contribute to improved patient care outcomes.
