ASA Sonography Scope of Practice

ASA Sonography Scope of Practice

The ASA Sonography Scope of Practice (SOP) sets out a clear and nationally consistent description of what graduate sonographers in Australia are educated, trained and competent to do. It defines the core elements of safe and effective practice and provides a practical reference for sonographers working across diverse clinical settings.

For the first time, Australian sonographers have a shared, profession-led SOP that outlines key capabilities, clinical responsibilities and the professional behaviours expected of sonographers at entry to practice. By establishing a common baseline, the SOP supports high quality patient care and strengthens clinical governance across ultrasound services.

Designed for sonographers, employers, educators and the broader health sector, this document helps clarify the role of the sonographer, guides workplace expectations and supports consistent decision making about individual scope of practice.

The SOP is also relevant for sonographers in New Zealand. While New Zealand has a different regulatory framework, a clear articulation of graduate capabilities supports consistent education, strengthens understanding of the role and provides a shared reference point that reflects the close trans-Tasman relationship in sonography.

This document lays essential groundwork for future work on advanced scope pathways and career development. It marks an important milestone for the profession and reflects the commitment of the sonography sector to safe practice and sustained professional growth.
